I am against all government authority over education. The public-school movement was founded by and perpetuated by anti-Christian pagans with nefarious goals such as Horace Mann and John Dewey. (I suggest Bobbie Ames's book Land that I Love.) Biblically speaking, civil government's job is justice and defense, period.
Involvement in the marketplace, including schooling, poisons government objectivity in matters of justice, as you cannot have interest in something and be an objective judge of it. Fooling around the edges with such concerns may help temporarily, but long-term only muddies the situation and delays real reform.
Practically speaking, as long government has authority over any activity and funds it, it will have leverage to use against you.
Moreover, as education interests are entirely local—with parents having rightful authority and responsibility—as with the federal government, the state should have no authority. Education ought to be purely local.
But it should ultimately be purely private, with godly philanthropy, dare I say the tithe, as the appropriate means to serve the poor.
For all the above reasons, the only solution is to eliminate the mandatory attendance laws, at least to put the state on par with private schooling. Let the state compete for a change.
Otherwise, we are merely re-arranging statist furniture. Please let us work toward a true solution.
